The UN Security Council agreed to extend arm embargo on South Sudan until May 31st 2024

The UN Security Council has extended the arm embargo on South Sudan until the 31st May 2024. The newly agreed resolution by the council will see member states of the body prevent the direct or indirect supply , sale or transfer of military equipments to South Sudan. The council has strongly depended its decision and condemned the unity government of targeting civilians, journalists , human rights defenders and called on the unity government to step up and protect the civilians from war crimes and genocides.

The Bank Of South Sudan  has announced a major plan to auction ten millions US dollar into the local market next week in an attempt to normalize what it calls ' Skyrocketing exchange rate '. 

The South Sudanese Pound has weakened against the dollar since Independence with $1 currently trading at over 1000SSP. The crisis has affected locals making it difficult for most families to afford basic items in the market as prices have increased.

The South Sudanese Pound ( SSP ) has depreciated to SSP920-948 at the Central Bank according to sources familiar with the reports. Meanwhile, the exchange rate at the Black Market has reached an alarming level with $1 equal to a staggering SSP1010 hence worsening the already challenging economic situations in the country.

The depreciation of the local currency has caused widespread fear of hikes in prices of basic goods and the cost of accessing healthcare services in the country.

The President of the Republic of South Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit has voiced his support not to extend the current transitional period as the country is likely to go for general elections in 2024.

During the commemoration ceremony to mark the 40th anniversary of SPLA day, Kiir told the government officers that he has said many times there won’t be further extension of the transitional period as the current unity government is determined to bring the lasting peace and grant South Sudanese rights to choose their leaders through transparent and credible elections. 
 

South Sudan People's Defense Forces ( SSPDF ) say there will be no official celebrations to commemorate SPLA day this year.

South Sudan People's Defense Forces ( SSPDF) formally known as Sudan People Liberation Army/Movement ( SPLA/M) has said there won't be official celebrations to commemorate the Martyrs who rebelled against the Arab regime in  1983. The SPLA was a rebel movement that fought for the independence of South Sudan from the oppressive regime of Sudan for more than two decades. It became the official army of South Sudan after the country gained its independence in 2011.

The leader of Agwelek faction and SPLM-IO Kit-Gwang commander, General Johnson Olony, has returned to Juba for peace talks with President Salva Kiir. He arrived in the capital on Sunday morning with 200 soldiers and senior officers from his group.

Thousands of Sudanese and South Sudanese refugees in Egypt are at risk of getting arrested due to bureaucratic barriers making it almost impossible to renew their residency permits.  The move came a few months after Egyptian authorities exempt individuals from fines for delaying the renewal of residence permits.  Widespread problems had led to the Egyptian authorities putting in place a three month exemption period for Sudanese and South Sudanese expats to get their legal status sorted.
