South Sudan celebrates its 12th independence Anniversary.
South Sudanese celebrates their 12th anniversary of Independence on Sunday 9th 2023. President Kiir has appealed to all South Sudanese who have been displaced by the recent Civil War to return back home and embrace peace. In his speech titled ' Consolidating Peace and Stability to Pave the Way for Transparent, Fair, and Credible Elections', the president has urged the displaced population to come back home and participate in the upcoming general elections.
South Sudan gained its Independence from Sudan on 9th July 2011 that ended the longest civil war with the Arab Regime in Khartoum. However two years later , the world's youngest nation descended into a brutal civil war that has seen thousands of people killed and millions displaced to neighboring countries. The 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement appears to have brought some stability but some parts of the country are still engulfed with extrajudicial killings and localized conflicts between communities.
South Sudan is well known for its vast fertile lands and the local communities in all Regions engage with one another in cultivation during the rainy season. As of today, South Sudan is still reliant on foreign assistance as it has ever been before with millions of vulnerable people still dependent on aid and food insecure because climate change-driven flooding and drought are aggravating an already precarious situation.
